With the new administration in Washington, Europeans are relieved that there will be more predictability and more institutions involved in the making of the US policy towards the Middle East. On Iran, for example, Joe Biden's stance is generally in line with that of the EU’s; he has promised to reverse former president Donald Trump's policy of "maximum pressure.” The new secretary of state, Antony Blinken, has discussed the subject with his British, German, and French counterparts. How can Europe use this window of opportunity to pave the way for conflict resolution and peacebuilding in its southern neighborhood?
In two sessions, this roundtable brings together international experts to elaborate on European policy options. The first session “On Iran, Do Europe and the US See Eye to Eye?” focuses on the questions of whether the West should revive the JCPoA nuclear deal or craft a new, more comprehensive policy to deal with Teheran and what a new Iran policy should entail. The second session “Europe's Role in MENA's Conflict Zones” focuses on possibilities of coordinated US-European action in Syria and Libya, as well as Europe’s goals and priorities in the region.
