The migration-integration theme has been the primary lens through which German Turkish civic engagement and leadership initiatives have been examined and discussed, with an emphasis on cultural, political and religious identities. With a new generation of German Turkish civic leaders emerging, it appears that a new discourse may also be on the horizon – one which is guided more so by values of social justice, active citizenship, inclusion and asset-based community development. This new discourse is developing through the practices of a new generation of civic leaders who seek new approaches and operational models to promote civic engagement and foster social development among the German Turkish community as well as in German society overall.

The workshop is designed to collectively explore and define these emerging practices and themes which are paving the way toward a new discourse on civic engagement and leadership. It will include interactive modeling and mapping activities with the aim of developing a collective understanding of how currently stand-alone efforts might connect and thus create a community of practice to further develop, strengthen and expand existing initiatives.
