Demand for clean water, caused by surging population growth, environment abuse and poor water management, is becoming a dangerous source of conflict in many parts of the world. If the battles of yesterday were fought over land, and those of today over energy, the battles of tomorrow may be over water, experts argue. In this Policy Dialogue with Richard von Weizsäcker Fellows Brahma Chellaney and Denis Hayes, we would like to discuss the origins and the security implications of resource-linked territorial disputes. How likely are such conflicts to erupt? What could be strategies to avoid conflict and how can water resources be shared more equitably? Which regions of the world are most water-distressed?
