Qian Gang worked for 24 years as a journalist in China. He started as a reporter for the People's Liberation Army Daily in the 1970s, covering many stories including the Sino-Vietnamese War and the devastating earthquake in the city of Tangshan. Later, he used his reporting from the scene of the 1976 earthquake to write the award-winning book The Great Tangshan Earthquake. In the 1990s, he was closely involved in the professional and commercial development of Chinese media. He was the co-creator and the executive editor of News Probe, a weekly investigative news program on China Central Television. Moreover, he was the managing editor of Southern Weekend, a leading newspaper known under his tenure for its independent streak.

Since 2003, Qian Gang has focused on media research. He is the co-founder and co-director of the China Media Project, one of the world’s leading resources on Chinese media. Moreover, he is Honorary Lecturer at the University of Hong Kong.
