Vasyl Cherepanyn is a philosopher, curator, and director of the Visual Culture Research Center. His work operates at the intersection of art, political activism, and social transformation processes in the post-Soviet space.

 

Vasyl Cherepanyn is a philosopher, curator, and director of the Visual Culture Research Center in Kyiv, which he co-founded in 2008. The Visual Culture Research Center sees itself as a platform for collaborations between academic, artistic, and activist communities in the post-Soviet space.

Cherepanyn holds a PhD in philosophy (aesthetics) and taught at prestigious European universities, including the National University of Kyiv–Mohyla Academy, the University of Potsdam, Freie Universität Berlin, and the Universities of Helsinki and Warsaw. His work investigates the intersection of art, political activism, and social transformation processes.

As a curator, he is responsible for major projects such as the Kyiv Biennial (since 2015) and has realized international exhibitions including Hybrid Peace (2019) and Armed Democracy (2022). He is co-founder of the East Europe Biennial Alliance and a regular advisor of international cultural and art institutions. 

The Visual Culture Research Center has received important honors including the ECF Princess Margriet Award for Culture (2015) and an Igor Zabel Award grant (2018). Cherepanyn currently lives in Berlin and was appointed curator of the 14th Berlin Biennale, which will take place in the summer of 2027.
