Walter Russell Mead is a Distinguished Scholar in American Strategy and Statesmanship for the Hudson Institute. He is also the James Clarke Chace Professor of Foreign Affairs and the Humanities at Bard College. Walter Russell Mead was a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations from 1997 to 2010 where he served as the Henry A. Kissinger Senior Fellow for U.S. Foreign Policy from 2003 until his departure.

Walter Russell Mead is the author of many books, a regular columnist for the Wall Street Journal and the United States book reviewer for Foreign Affairs. He is also a founding board member of the New America Foundation and serves on the board of Freedom House and the American Interest.

In 2012 Walter Russell Mead was awarded the Benjamin Franklin Award for Public Service by the Foreign Policy Research Institute for his work in the field of American foreign policy. Moreover, he received the Lionel Gelber Price for best book in English on international relations by the Lionel Gelber Foundation in 2002 for his publication Special Providence.

He is an honors graduate of Groton and Yale.
