François Heisbourg is Senior Advisor for Europe at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) and special advisor for the Foundation for Strategic Studies in Paris. Prior to that, he chaired the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) as well as the Foundation Council of the Geneva Centre for Security Policy. His expertise in the field of foreign and security policy includes nuclear non-proliferation, disarmament/defense and terrorism. He also served at the French Permanent Mission to the U.N., New York, and as the International Security Advisor to the French Minister of Defense, and has been a senior executive at Thomson-CSF (now Thales) and Matra (now part of Airbus).

He is a founding member of the French-German Commission on Security and Defence and is currently a member of the European and International Council of the CNRS (Conseil National pour la Recherche Scientifique). He was involved in writing the French Defence and National Security White Papers under Presidents Sarkozy and Hollande.

François Heisbourg has published various books, including "Secrètes histoires" (2015), "Après Al Qaida- la Nouvelle Génération du Terrorisme" (2009) and "Iran - le Choix des Armes?" (2007).

He was awarded the Edmond Fréville prize (Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques) and the Amiral Castex prize for strategic literature.
