Meet our next Richard von Weizsäcker Fellows

More than 60 decision-makers and opinion leaders from all over the world have spent a residency at the Robert Bosch Academy. The institution of the Robert Bosch Stiftung is looking forward to welcoming more fellows in 2019.

Think.Debate.Inspire.

Residencies at the Robert Bosch Academy facilitate confidential exchange and solution-oriented cooperation among the fellows on issues of global relevance. They are provided with the intellectual and physical space to think and to exchange with other fellows, German and European experts as well as with the public in order to stimulate inspiring perspectives and new solutions for the manifold topics they are working on.  

Contributing to Sustainable Development Goals

During her time as a fellow, Zenda Ofir, a South-African evaluation expert, will look at the possibilities of evaluation practices to contribute to the goals of the Agenda 2030 for sustainable development. “The 2030 Agenda with its Global Goals confirms that the world urgently needs transformative, large-scale change that enables positive, sustained development trajectories - especially in the Global South - while strengthening our increasingly fragile ecosystems and compelling us to live within planetary boundaries. I will be working on how evaluative practice can best support this imperative”.

The Agenda 2030 for sustainable development will also be subject of the fellowship project of David Donoghue who is Ireland's Permanent Representative to the United Nations. “My broad research interest during my time as a Richard von Weizsäcker fellow will be the relationship between displacement and the Sustainable Development Goals. In particular, I will be exploring the impact of the SDGs on the situation of internally displaced persons”.

Changing Economy and Society

Dennis Shirley, Professor of Education at the Lynch School of Education at Boston College, will work on how new technologies influence schools, work places and society of tomorrow. “I will be interviewing Germans from a wide variety of leadership positions on the impact of technological change on schools and society. The research findings will be written to inform the public and policy makers about the far-reaching transformation of work and how it should be prepared for to minimize its problems and to maximize its benefits”.

Similarly, the reduction of barriers is subject of the project of the British-Canadian journalist and author Douglas Saunders. “I will study the locations and neighborhoods, in a variety of cities and economies, where economic development and social mobility are blocked by economic, cultural or material obstacles – the specific places where the pathway to a middle-class economy is interrupted. And I will examine some of the policies, actions and initiatives that have succeeded in removing such obstacles to growth and progress”.

Learning in Germany

How did Germany deal with its reunification? One of many questions the South Korean politician, diplomat and geographer, Woo-Ik Yu, will concentrate on during his time as a Richard von Weizsäcker fellow. “I am going to study on the reunification process of Germany, especially on the perception of people upon socio-economic integration during and after the political reunification. The result will consist an important part of my planned book, `The reunification of Korean Peninsula´”.

The German perspective on the international cultural exchange will be the focus of JP Singh, Director of the Institute for International Cultural Relations at the University Edinburgh. „I will be working on a book on the importance of international cultural relations in these times of cultural anxiety and politics”.

Sheila Jasanoff, Indian American expert on science and technology studies, will look at the status of the development of biomedicine, bioethics and legal bases in Germany. “I will be investigating the treatment of human dignity in German bioethics and constitutional law and studying the concept's impact on the conduct of biomedical research in Germany”.
