With the annexation of Crimea and its policy of destabilization of Eastern Ukraine Russia has undermined the post-cold war European security order. Relations between Russia and the European Union are at a new low. The leaders of EU member states, and not only them, appear to be unassertive in how to deal with the new Russian power play. At the same time internal support for Putin´s counter-modernization policy has been growing. The concepts of de-Europeanization and de-Westernization – whatever they mean – are becoming more and more popular. Russians show increased skepticism about democratic institutions and many have rejected outright the EU stance on sexual minorities.
